Last week was a huge win for Senate Bill 4, “Get On Your Feet,” which helps young people graduating from college manage their student debt. The bill passed the Finance Committee and now is heading to the Appropriations Committee before it will be on the Senate floor.
“Get On Your Feet” is a critical piece of legislation. I’m grateful to everyone who testified in committee; we heard from a graduate who is paying back $90,000 in student loans, and others who are struggling to afford payments on $20,000 loans. Another young woman said she spends more money on making student loan payments each month than she does on rent, utilities, and groceries combined.
If signed into law, the Get On Your Feet program will enroll thousands of graduates into “income based repayment plans” for their student loans and even help them make payments for up to two years.
I have a few more bills coming up that will tackle issues that affect so many of us here in Colorado — issues like improving our air quality and increased regulation of pesticide use.
Keep your eyes on the lookout for upcoming legislation this week.
I have a town hall this upcoming weekend with Speaker of the House KC Becker and Representative Hooton. I’d love to see you there.
